What is Art?

One question, what is art?

Now that we’ve made up our minds about making the world’s LARGEST piece of art using images from social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter, we thought we would have a little chat about what would class this as art.

So what is art? Is it one painting of a woman named Mona? Is it a shark preserved in formaldehyde? Is it an arrangement of lights? Or is it something so completely mad and unique, that no one would ever dream of producing it?

Does art have to be produced by a well known artist or sculptor who was plenty of history and recognition associated with their name? Or can it be made simply by anyone and everyone? Is art a painting or a photo? Is it a sculpture or something random?

The fact is, art can surely be anything. As history shows there are no set rules to determine what art is. Art changes all the time. Art is different and unique in every sense of the word.

This is where we would like to start our project. It is something unique and different. We are not artists or sculptors with years of work and a reputation to show. We do not know much about art at all if we are being totally honest.

These key factors are ones which we believe will make TheSocialArtwork a success. As we’ve mentioned before, we believe that something like this has never been done before. At least we hope not. This would be modern art produced by anyone and everyone. The whole world of social networking coming together to produce something is unique.

Nobody famous or infamous is making this piece of art. It is everybody and anybody. Who knows, hopefully we will get some celebs on board sharing their TwitPics. Or perhaps even some astronauts? That would be pretty impressive.

As we’ve said before, we are simply trying to do something different and unique. Some people will want to be part of this, others will not. It is as simple as that. If Mark Zuckerberg can invent Facebook from his dorm and make it a huge success, then surely we can make TheSocialArtwork as great success too!

Please help this project grow by spreading the word and telling your friends to check us out!

Thank You!

TheSocialArtwork - The worlds LARGEST art project!

The human eye, on average, views around 20 billion images throughout its lifespan.

Every month, approximately 2.5 billion images are uploaded to Facebook alone. The website Flickr hosts 4 billion. Millions of people also upload numerous twitpics onto Twitter every day.

Statistics like these got us thinking one day. Wouldn't it be amazing if everyone using such websites could join together and produce something epic. Wouldn’t it be interesting to create one of the world’s largest art projects by just using images from social networks alone? Think about it.

Social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace play such a huge part of our lives these days. Its hard to think what we did before these websites existed and what it would be like if we didn’t have them at all. There would be no poking or liking on Facebook, no tweeting on Twitter and no moods on MySpace.

People are continually uploading photos of all sorts to these websites, so what would it be like to have all these images presented as one big art work? It would surely show the power of the internet and social networking sites in our lives.

So, after hours of chatting and brainstorming about this subject, we came up with the idea of TheSocialArtwork.com, the world’s LARGEST art project.

Using the power of social networking websites such as Twitter, MySpace, Flickr and Facebook, we aim to make this a global project, one that everything can be done through these websites. Not just the collection of images, but for everyone all over the world to have their input on everything from how we should display the final image collection, to where it should be shown, to what happens over the next few years.

The more coverage we can get, the better. The more people involved, the better. The more photos, THE BETTER!

We are currently developing our website, thesocialartwork.com, and it should be live within the next week or two. As the main idea of this project is to use social networking websites, our website is pretty basic and has just been designed as a hub to provide information and links for people wanting to be part of this exciting new venture.

Hopefully as this project gathers speed and progresses into the huge project it deserves to be, more and more people will join us.

At the moment we have setup profiles and groups on the main social networking websites, links to which can be found on our website. However, if there is a network that you feel should be part of the social artwork experience, please get in touch and let us know.

At the end of the day, we are just trying to do something different, something that we hope has never been done before and something that we hope can be fun and get as many people involved as possible. We don’t know much about website development (hence our basic website) or about what good or bad things this project will bring (hopefully all good though).

So with this in mind, we invite you all to become part of something huge, the worlds LARGEST art project, The Social Artwork.

After all, its up to you guys to make this work!

Thank You
